A High-tech wonder

In 2017, the Porsche 919 Hybrid was again competing in the highest energy efficiency class established by the regulations. This means that on a 13.629-kilometer lap at Le Mans, the car is allowed to use eight megajoules of recuperated energy while being limited to a maximum fuel consumption of 4.31 liters. Both consumption levels are closely monitored and accounted for after each lap. For the recuperation technology used in the 919 Hybrid, Porsche in 2017 again relies on a combination of kinetic energy recuperation at the front axle and conversion of exhaust energy into electricity. The electrical energy is placed into interim storage in lithium ion batteries and can be accessed to boost output by the driver pushing a button.
