Formula E: New season set for an electrifying start

The starting lights will soon illuminate to mark the start of the Formula E season 2017/2018! Schaeffler, in its fourth Formula E season will once again, team up with Audi in what has proven a strong partnership so far. The electric racing series is becoming more and more admired in the international motorsport world. The competition between the teams is heating up as other well-known manufacturers get in on the action. But Formula E’s increasing importance reaches well beyond the racetrack – as Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Gutzmer, Chief Technology Development Officer and Deputy Chairman of Schaeffler AG, confirms: 'Electromobility and motorsport are finally established as a profitable combination.'

New partner, clear mission: title defense

Off the back of a very successful season where the ABT Schaeffler team claimed the drivers' championship as well as second place in the team classification, expectations remain high: at least the same if not better. There’s an air of confidence at Schaeffler which can be felt by everyone. The conditions couldn’t be better and driver Lucas di Grassi is raring to go. For the first time in his career, he starts the new season with the bib number '1' - reserved for the defending champion. His team-mate is youngster Daniel Abt, who joined Audi as a factory driver and drives with number 66. It is also the fourth Formula E season for this driver duo.

Success through innovation

Their vehicle is the Audi e-tron FE04, at the heart of which lies an engine transmission unit that has been stripped down for maximum efficiency. Schaeffler, as the technology partner, has completely redesigned the powertrain. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gutzmer sees the increasing power density in the field as a true driving force: 'It is not enough to rest on our laurels from the preseason. Racing is about translating experience into innovation right away.” Indeed, with Audi’s expertise and experience from racing series such as the DTM and WEC, the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team is getting a powerful boost. The influence of Formula E knowledge will once again be seen in the components Schaeffler develops for electric series drives - whether in the selection of materials, the design of electric motors, the arrangement of the magnets, air gaps and much more.

Formula E: the new crowd puller

The commitment of established manufacturers such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz will bring more attention to the racing series. More and more Formula E races are evolving into major events that capture audiences worldwide. And the best thing about it: Completely new target groups are becoming enthusiastic about the future technology of e-mobility.

The hour is approaching. Set your watches: At 10:00am (CET), 2nd of December, Hong Kong the electric cars will once again take to the asphalt to battle it out. We look forward to the first race and an exciting season ahead in the Formula E world!
